Melake-Hiwot Gebrehiwot Kidane, a survivor of the massacre, served the church of St. Mary in Adi Daero for 59 years. He says on the 15th of November 2020, having heard Eritrean soldiers were looting churches and having seen his church in flames, he and other worshipers showed up at the church to help put out the fire during which they were confronted by Eritrean soldiers. The soldiers then took them to where their commanders were. The commanders, without any hesitation ordered the soldiers “to kill us all”. He says he was the only one who miraculously survived the massacre on that fateful day.
